What are OTT platforms?

It means ‘Over-the-Top’ as one can stream the content through any device with an internet connection and without a traditional broadcast, cable, satellite pay-TV provider.

Why it is Trending?

As people are staying home due to Pandemic use of OTT is increasing every day. It’s easy to switch to OTT platforms from multiplex or regular cable TV because people have access to

  • Cheap devices through which they can use OTT platforms
  • Cheap plans
  • Variety of shows at cost of 1 movie ticket
  • Edutainment (My favorite)

It’s been 5 years since I have started using OTT platforms. I am a huge Netflix fan. Even before 2020 (from the time most people started switching to OTT) I use to wonder how amazing it would be if all big-budget movies are released on these platforms but my reasons were way different from Netflix and Chill

Reason 1: The ticket prices are high in multiples which I am ready to pay for the experience but I am not able to enjoy my favorite food as I have to order from the multiplex ‘ONLY’ that too at 4X price.

Reason 2: There are no strict rules if a kid is disturbing or a man/woman is speaking on the phone ‘LOUDLY’. It is sooo annoying.

But soon I realized that’s not the only reason to love OTT platforms. One more reason to love it is that I get “Edutainment” Education + Entertainment.

I have mentioned below how it has helped me to learn new things

  1. Got to watch how Theory/Concepts/Business Models/Crisis you learned about happens/happened.

Movies, Series, & Documentaries like

  • Founder: Backstage story of McDonald's Business Model
  • Scam 1992: Even though I had a Finance major I felt the show explained the concepts better than my Professor and case studies.
  • Big Bang Theory: Science is not for ‘Nerds’ only.
  • Connected: Surprising ways in which we are connected to each other and the universe.
  • The imitation game: Before watching it I didn't even know there is an “Enigma Machine” and it was used in World War.

and there are many more such shows which have helped me to see the world by just sitting in my room.

2. Relatability

Isn't it wonderful when we relate to the characters or the storyline of the show and answers some recurring questions?

Well…that’s what happened when I watched The Bold Type.

First of all, it’s a show full of positivity (not toxic motivation) that can change your mood. The way Jaqline Jacqueline Carlyle (Boss of a fashion magazine) advises the characters in the show is so relatable that you will want to listen to it like a “Gospel Truth”.

The show celebrates friendship. And it’s not about going on a road trip or having cocktails with your friends. It’s like being supportive of their decision, respecting their choices, allowing each other the space to process in their own way, to retain individuality while being a part of a group.

And I got to learn so many things about Breast Cancer, Women's Hygiene, Sexualities, Relationships, Religious Beliefs, Workplace Bonding, Putting forward an Opinion, and most importantly Feminism.

It clearly changed my perspective towards social issues and living life.

3. Awareness about LGBTQIA+

I’ll be honest I never learned about sexualities in school as there were no Sex Education classes. But through OTT platforms I have got to know so much

  • The everyday struggle of this community especially if one is a teen.
  • Different types of sexualities.
  • Peer pressure while coming out.
  • Social Taboo after coming out.
  • After facing the above hurdles come the common relationship issues
  • How a family/friends should accept their loved ones the way they are.

Today I can proudly say that I am an LGBTQIA+ Ally.

I would highly recommend shows like Sex Education, Schitt's Creek, The Bold Type, Atypical, etc.

4. Bridging the gap between generations

After watch melodrama and “FAKE” happy ending for years have got some shows which show reality and make the previous generation realize that it’s okay to be imperfect and it’s okay to follow your heart instead of being under constant pressure that what other people will think.

5. Connecting with people

In my MBA college, I had this outbound activity day. But I didn't enjoy it that much as I never actually bonded with anyone. But during lectures when I got to know that some people around me love Brooklyn 99, I was like “NOICE” and are still connected in fact we use to watch the show together during the lockdown.

No doubt dating apps ask questions like….

This or That
